Prepare for Student Teaching

Student teaching is the capstone of the teacher education process. It takes place during your final semester at Illinois State.

To start student teaching, you’ll need to complete program requirements, apply (résumé draft required), submit unofficial transcripts at a later date after application process, and complete Gateway 1 requirements.

Before You Begin

To student teach, you’ll need to:

  • Complete all major course requirements
  • Participate in clinical experiences
  • Complete all Gateway 1 requirements
  • Know where you will be living during  student teaching 
  • Complete PBA Workshop. Your Illinois Educator Identification Number (IEIN) is required for application

    When: Fall of Junior Year

    When: One Year Before Student Teaching
    What's Needed: Unofficial transcript and updated résumé

  3. 3. Prepare to Teach

    When: One Semester Before Student Teaching
    What's Needed: Completed requirements and confirmed placement details

Step 1: Apply for Student Teaching

Apply in the fall of your junior year. A résumé draft is required. For transfer students, check with your advisor.

Résumé Requirements for Student Teaching Application

  • Include your student teaching semester and only information related to student teaching
  • Keep the template’s layout and font
  • 1-2 pages
  • Save as PDF with the proper file name: LastName_FirstName_Resume (Example: Redbird_Reggie_Resume.pdf)

Step 2: Submit Materials

The year before you start student teaching, you’ll receive an email from TeacherEdCenter to submit an unofficial transcript and updated student teaching résumé.

Traditional Fall student teachers will receive an email with instructions for uploading your unofficial ISU transcript and updated résumé after Fall '26 grades are posted.

Traditional Spring student teachers will receive an email with instructions for uploading your unofficial ISU transcript and updated résumé after Spring '27 grades are posted.

Transfer students transfer transcripts may be needed at a future date. An unofficial PDF transcript is acceptable.

PDS students should have their unofficial ISU transcript and résumé ready to upload when they apply. Secondary PDS students will need transfer transcripts ready to upload when they apply.

Step 3: Prepare to Teach

The semester before you start student teaching, make sure you prepare and have everything you need.

Check your email

All information related to student teaching will be sent to your Illinois State email throughout the calendar year.

Get insurance coverage

Make sure you have adequate health and accident coverage.

Update your contact information

You can make changes to your contact information in My.IllinoisState.edu. If you update your information, email us and let us know; we are NOT automatically notified of changes.

Meet with regional coordinators

You’ll meet with the coordinators to discuss the placement process.

Take time to learn and understand various guidelines for student teaching.
