Prepare for Student Teaching

Student teaching is the capstone of the teacher education process. It takes place during your final semester at Illinois State.

To start student teaching, you’ll need to apply, create a resume, submit an unofficial transcript, and prepare to fulfill any additional requirements.

Before You Begin

To student teach, you’ll need to:

Complete all major course requirements
Participate in clinical experiences
Complete all Gateway 1 requirements
Decide where you want to student teach
Know your Illinois Educator Identification Number (IEIN) (Recommended)

One Year Before Student Teaching
3. Prepare to Teach
One Semester Before Student Teaching

Apply for Student Teaching

Apply in the fall of your junior year. For transfer students, check with your advisor.

Submit Transcript and Resume

The year before you start student teaching, you’ll receive an email from TeacherEdCenter to submit an unofficial transcript and student teaching resume.

Get your unofficial transcript.

Request from the Registrar’s office

Secondary PDS students will need an unofficial transcript when applying.

Write your resume.

This resume is for student teaching only and is not your final professional resume.

Include your student teaching semester and only information related to student teaching
Keep the template’s layout and font
One page only
Save as PDF with the proper file name: LastName_FirstName_Resume (Example: Redbird_Reggie_Resume.pdf)

Prepare to Teach

The semester before you start student teaching, make sure you prepare and have everything you need.

Check your email.

All information related to student teaching will be sent to your Illinois State email.

Get insurance coverage.

Make sure you have adequate health and accident coverage.

Learn more about insurance

Update your contact information.

You can make changes to your contact information in My.IllinoisState.edu. If you update your information, send us an email and let us know.

Meet with regional coordinators.

You’ll meet with the coordinators to discuss the placement process.

Review standards and policies.

Take time to learn and understand various guidelines for student teaching.
